Top Chef Night! Kevin Gillespie & A Bear’s Life giveaway

Last fall, there was a lot of excitement around food circles in Atlanta about rumored cheftestants from Atlanta who would be competing on Bravo’s Top Chef. The previous winter myself and a couple of blogger buddies Hardy & Rowdy checked out a number of Atlanta restaurants in what was deemed the Riding Dirty Challenge. We challenged restaurants and their chefs & sommeliers to put together food & wine pairings under $25. A lot of folks around town thought we were crazy (we are) but we had a great time and met some amazing chefs around town including Kevin Gillespie (seen above) and Eli Kirshtein who both made it onto the program. Before you ask, no Kevin didn’t prepare pork… pan roasted diver scallops,  braised leeks & fennel, bouillabaise sauce & herb salad.

Fast forward to today, Kevin didn’t win top chef but was awarded fan favorite, gained a ton of fans, and his beard gained a facebook group. Speaking of beards, his facial hair has gained attention of bears. Not the bears in the zoo obviously, but hairy gay men that call themselves bears. Although not a bear himself, he has plenty of fans in the community and has a feature article in A Bear’s Life Magazine’s food issue out now.

The article isn’t available online without purchasing a subscription, but Kevin’s publicist provided three autographed issues for me to give away to fans (US & Canada) on the blog. The giveaway is easy…simply leave a comment on the blog and tell me what you like about Kevin by Sunday June 20, 11:59pm Eastern.

P.S. My good friends Matt Armendariz & Adam Pearson are also featured in the same issue!

June 17, 2010 - 12:12 am Matt - He was the highlight of that season for me, not just for his looks and his unique style, but for his positive attitude. It's a difficult contest and the challenges take their toll on the contestants. I thought Kevin held his own and showed a love for food all the way to the last rounds.

June 17, 2010 - 1:49 am michael - Australia counts as part of Canada right? ;) we're both part of the commonwealth... I loved Kevin on the show he was (generally) so self-deprecating and he just seemed like such a nice guy and his Mom was just lovely :)

June 17, 2010 - 9:37 am John H - uh, the tattoos!

June 17, 2010 - 12:17 pm Julia C - I thought he was such an easy going guy that cooked AH-MAZING food (most of the time).

June 17, 2010 - 3:51 pm edmontonjb - I love his easy-going attitude. Most men would probably turn down a spread in A Bear's life magazine!

June 18, 2010 - 3:55 am Heidi in Pittsburgh - I not only appreciated his approach as far as keeping things simple and delicious rather than over-the-top fru-fru, but Kevin is committed to the concept of sustainable food. Personality-wise, I liked that he was friendly and humble, and how he treated others on Top Chef with respect and was more into rising or falling on his own merits than he ever was into being about "drama." It's awesome that he has enough of a sense of humor about himself to attend the party for his beard, and that he was open-minded enough to appear in "Bear's Life" despite being straight. Quality chef, and quality person!

June 18, 2010 - 1:35 pm valerie - I think Kevin, Michael, Brian and Jennifer showed way more talent, skill and maturity than any other chefs in any other season! And Kevin...if I were only a decade or 2 younger!!!

June 18, 2010 - 5:42 pm Steve - Kevin is a hottie!

June 19, 2010 - 12:43 am AJ - He's adorable and would certainly bring me a delicious snack if I was a sad cub.

June 19, 2010 - 12:44 am Blake - I absolutely LOVED Kevin in Top Chef! I don't know what I would do if I ever got to meet the guy, but I would absolutely love to have his food. I loved the way he approaches making delicious food and I could only hope to be even a tenth as good as he is in the kitchen.

June 19, 2010 - 8:42 am Steve - I just got through watching the repeats of last season Wednesday night! Although Michael and Bryan were hot, they just didn't do anything for me the way that Kevin did! I am a fan of his on his Facebook page! I must admit, I do have a thing for Redheaded Bears! My printer has been so busy lately! Whenever Kevin has a reciept that comes out, it gets printed!

June 19, 2010 - 5:50 pm Regi - Kevin is an incredible chef. And I know not just from his stint on "Top Chef", but also from eating at Woodfire Grill. I put my dining experience completely in his hands and went with the chef's tasting menu. As I was enjoying this incredible meal, Kevin came out and greeted a number of diners, actually stopping by my table for a conversation. He's as friendly and personable as he is talented in the kitchen. And VERY handsome to boot.

June 19, 2010 - 11:40 pm Ed - Kevin stood out for me before the season even started, because of his looks. When the episodes started airing, and we got to see how much he loved to share his down-home style of cooking, not only remaining competetive, but often winning challenges, it was very easy to hope that he would win.

June 20, 2010 - 10:36 pm Mark - What is it with chefs and tattoos? I like it!

August 11, 2010 - 3:57 pm terry scopelliti - Being the photographer who had the honor to shot those images for A Bear's Life (and being a bear myself) I can tell you that Kevin is one of the kindest and most interesting people it has been my pleasure to meet and photograph in Atlanta. I wish him continued success
